 Concerning IR 2006/07/12
RDSO, in collaboration with IIT-Kanpur and US based National Instrumentation, has developed an automated personal computer-based system to check the wheels of a train for flatness, even as they zip past at top speed.
The technical name of the system is Wheel Impact Load Detection (WILD) and it works with the help of two sets of 12 sensors each, fixed to the rails, at approximately a metre apart. These strain gauges pick up the minute vibrations as the train rolls over them, to judge the condition of every wheel. Data running into tens of gigabytes is logged by data acquisition system which then helps easy analysis.
